Fun Events in New York City [HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM ATLANTIC SOLUTIONS!]

December is here and with the holiday season comes all the fun events throughout the New York City area, only an hour away from us! Atlantic Solutions put together a fun list of some of the events going on throughout December that are easy to get to and super exciting to be a part of. So get our your calendar and keep reading!

  1. Check out the Bryant Park Winter Village where there are beautiful lights and ice skating, open through March. 
  2. For a classic Christmas tradition, purchase tickets to the Radio City Spectacular, a wild night of high kicks and classic Christmas music. It’s well worth the experience.
  3. The Rockefeller Christmas tree lighting ceremony is one for the picture books. Try and make a weekend of it and head into New York City to see this glorious tree. 
  4. Looking for Christmas gifts? Check out the Grand Bazaar on the Upper West Side. This menagerie of different local artists and craftsmen is the perfect place to find those last minute gifts, open until the 24th of December. 
  5. Classic Harbor Cruises are beautiful in December, with all of New York City lit up and beautiful. Check out the holiday deals for Cocoa and Carols, Holiday Wine Tasting and much more. More details available here.
  6. Check out the famous window displays, stores like Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdales, and Macy’s that go all out to celebrate the holiday spirit and commercialism.
  7. If you want a very New York experience, purchase a bus ticket for The Ride. The Ride is unlike any other bus, with LED Screens and full glass windows to see the sights of New York. Get on this and it will take you all around the best lit holiday scenery that New York City has to offer, including The Empire State Building, Schubert Alley, 42nd Street, Broadway Row, Carnegie Hall, and Columbus Circle.

As you can see there is no end to the opportunities that New York City has to offer during this wonderful time of the year. Atlantic Solutions is lucky to be so close to all of these events and we plan to head out with some of our work friends to see at least a few of these fun things. 6 Ways to Become a Better Leader

Atlantic Solutions is proud to have some of the strongest leaders in the industry on our team. But the truth is that none of them got to where they are now without putting in hours and hours of hard work. We thought we’d save you a few of those hours but putting together a list of 6 of the most important lessons that every effective leader has learned.

1) Actions speak louder than words

Above all else, a good leader must lead by example. You can’t expect your team to behave a certain way if you’re behaving differently. For example, instead of telling your employees to be on time, start coming to work early. If you’re setting a good example, chances are that they’ll follow.

2) Maintain a student mentality

One of the most common mistakes that lousy leaders make is to assume that they know everything. Surround yourself with mentors. Even a president needs a team of advisors to support him. Observe the habits and actions of other strong leaders and learn from them, because there’s always room for improvement.

3) Patience is key

When one of your employees makes a mistake, take the time to pull them aside and encourage them. Make an effort to always be patient and forgiving. An effective leader is respected, not fearedbut respect has to be earned.

4) Support your team

Your employees are more likely to flourish if they know that you have their backs. Their goals should be your goals, because you can only be as successful as the people that you lead.

6) Be humble

Another pitfall of poor leaders is arrogance. Healthy communication is vital for any relationship, and if your focus is on being a member of the team rather than a boss, your employees will feel comfortable communicating with you openly.

As will all things, practice makes perfect. Start implementing these good habits today. You may not transform into a world-class leader overnight, but working hard at them will yield results!

3 Beautiful Waterfall Hikes in NJ to Trek This Fall

All of us at Atlantic Solutions (Somerset, NJ) love to stay active — so we can’t help but get excited that #falliscoming, and with it, new reasons to play outside.

Even for long-time New Jersey residents, there are a lot of lesser-known waterfall wonders just waiting to be discovered. Hiking is a wonderful way to exercise, breathe some fresh air, and get away from the bustle of everyday life to feel some clarity and experience some exposure to nature. Here are 3 glorious waterfalls that you can hike to right here in New Jersey!

  1. Schooley’s Mountain 

Schooley’s Mountain Boulder Gorge Loop is an awesome hike which is just about 1 hour from Atlantic Solutions. It is approximately 2.3 miles and provides you with a beautiful waterfall view, as well as gorgeous wildflowers and a tremendous forest. It is a great place for a Saturday hike this fall, guaranteeing splendid views and a day worth of fun!

2. Coppermine’s Trail

March along the old copper mines in Hardwick for some green and lively trails, views of rural New Jersey, and plenty of streams and cascades this fall! As you make it to the top of the hike, you will be colliding with the Appalachian Trail! Most of the path follows a stream and the hike provides a lot of spots for breaks with excellent views.

There are 10.2, 4.8, and 1.5-mile options for varying degrees of hikers, which makes Coppermine’s Trail a convenient spot for all levels of adventurers! This hike is about 1.5 hours from Somerset, which is still close enough for a day trip!

3. Chikahoki Falls

This alluring hike can either be done in 7.7 or 2.6 miles. Chikahoki Falls is 45 minutes or so from Atlantic Solutions and it provides some pretty stunning views. At the top, which is formerly referred to as Wyanokie High Point, you can see an impressive 360-degree view of the area below. Also, on a clear fall day, you will be able to see substantial foliage paired with an awe-inspiring view of New York City!

In addition to the views that await you atop Chikahoki Falls and the rest of Norvin Green State Forest, there are plenty of waterfalls to stare and be amazed by on your journey. This spot is the closest of the three and definitely deserves a Saturday or Sunday to fully appreciate!

Our Prized HR Manager, Chavely Mendez, Gives an Inside Look at Her Job

Chavely Mendez is the Human Resources Manager here at Atlantic Solutions (Somerset, NJ) which is a position that holds a lot of responsibility. She handles all of the recruiting for the company, including all of the logistics and paperwork for new hires. Chavely also regularly analyzes and documents best practices for recruitment, while speaking to over 100 people per day. It’s safe to say that her position requires a certain degree of diligence, patience, organization, and an arsenal of people skills.

After college, Chavely worked in retail. However, she didn’t feel a passion towards the industry and was soon on the hunt for a position that would fill her needs.

“I had another company that wanted to hire me for a human resources position, but after Screen Shot 2017-06-27 at 11.20.16 AMmy first interview at Atlantic Solutions, I knew where I needed to be. The people were just so welcoming and friendly here and it actually made me feel really comfortable. My nerves were calmed and the environment just felt right. I was asked to come in for another interview at the first company I mentioned; but, instead, I interviewed again with Atlantic Solutions which was the best decision I’ve made.”

When she did come back for that second interview, Chavely felt the familiar comfort and ease that she did before. I bet you’re wondering if that same feeling held up once she was hired and started her career in Human Resources – well this is what she had to say about her job:

“What I love the most is performing behind the scenes and having a real, tangible sense of responsibility. I love helping DK help build his company. I love being able to talk to everyone before they are hired and that I get to show them around the office. I really love my job.”

She sure does have a strong passion for what she does. Another part of the Human Resources role is fostering relationships with coworkers in the workplace to maintain a positive morale and a teamwork mentality.

It’s a fun and engaging way to get to know each other on a more personal level outside of the workplace. Team night provides a stress-free environment where I can learn more about our employees’ goals and what they want to accomplish, which I think is important when trying to stimulate success.”

She speaks highly of her coworkers, stating that it’s easy to maintain both professional relationships as well as friendships outside of the office.

It is no question that Chavely is a brilliant Human Resources Manager and we’re so lucky to have her on the Atlantic Solutions team!

Get to Know James Schnell [PART 3]

What personal and professional lessons have you learned from working at Atlantic Solutions?

I’ve learned a lot. Professionally, I’ve really learned about becoming a leader and taking on a management role. All of the other jobs I’ve had, I was always an employee. I hated my boss and I never liked having a boss. This job has shown me that there are opportunities out there where you don’t have to be a boss. I always thought about opening my own business, and watching someone like DK has shown me that as long as you’re a good mentor, people are going to respect you. You don’t have to demand that leadership. People respect you for being who you are. Personally, I’ve learned to be a very positive person and to look on the bright side of things. The past couple of years, my family has been through a lot. I’ve always looked on the bright side of things, but I never thought that I could be more positive. I was around negative people in my life. But being around positive, happy people have made me even more positive. I thought I was positive already! That really helped me out. Nothing really gets me down anymore.

What do you want to be remembered for?

I want to be remembered as a guy who was always there for others. A guy who was always happy and always helping others and could always be relied on. I love when people say “I can count on James, I’m going to go to him.” Whether it’s my family or people that I work with here or friends, I love when people know that they can count on me. I love being there for people. That’s definitely one thing I want to be remembered for.

Get to Know James Schnell [PART 2]

In this next part of our interview with James Schnell, he shares his thoughts on leadership, building professional relationships, and what he thinks of his boss. Check it out!

Being in a position of leadership, how do you balance professionalism and friendliness with your team?

I used to watch my brothers and sisters when my parents were working, and my relationship with my team kind of reminds me of that. I have personal relationships with the guys on my team, however, I respect them and they respect me and trust me enough to follow me as a leader. Anytime I get close with one of the guys on my team, I make sure that they know that this is a professional business first. We’re here to grow together in a professional business environment.

What other qualities do you think make you a strong leader?

I always make sure that I’m at work early. I’m here much earlier than everyone else is every morning. I’m very professional with my image and in my actions as well. I make sure that I stay professional both inside and outside of the office of course. I always make sure that I’m reliable. I respect my guys and they respect me. They know that they can always rely on me for anything job-related or otherwise. I’m very responsible too.

Can you describe DK, the president of Atlantic Solutions? What do you admire about him as a leader?

Even in that first interview with him, he was so so energetic and positive. We had a great connection immediately. He’s such a great mentor. A lot of people respect him. At every conference we go to, everybody loves DK.

He actually reminds me of my dad. My dad actually worked for the buses with the MTA for 32 years. Everywhere he went, people loved him. I still have people that tell me “Oh, I love your dad!” DK reminds me so much of my dad because he’s so loved and respected, you can’t help but really like someone like that. He’s such a good guy, and you know he always has your back. That’s such a cool thing. If somebody does something wrong he doesn’t yell at them, he just takes them to the side and has a good, critical conversation with them. He always makes you feel good. I’ve had a couple bad days. Of course, everyone has bad days. Just one little two-second conversation with him will perk me right back up. He’s the man.

Get to Know James Schnell [PART 1]

At Atlantic Solutions, we believe in training our employees to be excellent and effective leaders. In just six months since starting here, James Schnell has become an exemplary member of our team. We caught up with him to learn a little more about what he’s learned, what he does, and why he loves it.

How long have you worked at Atlantic Solutions? How did you end up working there?

I’ve been here for about six months. Before this, I was actually managing a FedEx warehouse. I had graduated the previous year from King University with a degree in Psychology. I was kind of stuck and didn’t know where I wanted to go in my life after school. I had put my resume on a recruiter website and I got contacted by Atlantic Solutions. And I thought “Oh, this could be something interesting.” So then I came in for the interview and it all happened from there. I met with DK. It was more like a conversation than an interview, it was awesome. I was really excited about the growth opportunity in this job; starting at one level and then grow to one day running my own branch office.

What’s your favorite part about working at Atlantic Solutions besides the growth opportunity?

My favorite part is definitely the work environment. We have a lot of fun. I’m a big family guy, I’m actually one of seven kids. Since the day I started, I’ve seen everybody working hard but also being themselves at the same time. Nobody is robotic. They don’t need to be told what to do. Everyone is very professional and we’re one big family. I’m closer with the people at this job than I am with my childhood friends. We’ve spent so much time together and we’ve become really close. That’s definitely my favorite part.

3 Techniques That Will Help Free You From Your Procrastination [LIST]

In celebration of Independence Day, the day that the United States gained independence from the British Empire, us here at Atlantic Solutions (Somerset, NJ) would like to provide some tips on how you can free yourself from procrastination.

Procrastination is a hard habit to shake, but adding these techniques into your daily routine will undoubtedly help you get on track!

  1. Make your bed in the morning

It sounds silly, right? But making your bed in the morning is a wonderful way to boost your brain into productivity mode. You are being productive starting from the second that you wake up, which will make you immediately feel accomplished. This nice psychological boost in the morning will set your mind in the right place, creating a desire for more accomplishments and productivity!

 

2. Make an organized to-do list.

To-do lists are an obvious technique for productivity. Whether it’s daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly goals, setting out your tasks in a checklist format is a great way to visualize what you need to do. However, these can get bogged up and unorganized. A great way to arrange your to-do list is to group the goals into different categories based off of difficulty and time. After that, it is best to start small – just like making your bed. It will feel great to accomplish a goal, little or small.

3. Treat it like an exercise

When somebody rolls off of the couch and decides to start working out, they don’t immediately go for the 100lb dumbells. Similarly, kicking procrastination and heightening your focus takes time and patience. There are things that you can do right away which will aid you in this process, like putting your phone away during the time that you want to be productive and eliminating all external distractions, but it does not happen overnight. Like any skill, it takes time and effort to be able to focus and be productive without procrastination, especially if it has been happening for awhile. We certainly appreciate the learning process here at Atlantic Solutions.

4. Learn to ignore things

When you have a lot on your plate, or in this case on your to-do list, it is important to learn to ignore some of it. It can be extremely overwhelming to look at a packed to-do list, organized or not because you tend to lump all of the tasks in together as one great big pile of stress. Focus on one task to get started and ignore the rest to avoid distraction and procrastination. Sometimes when we see this inordinate list, we semi-panic and turn to entertainment on the internet, which only delays our problem.

5. Overestimate the amount of time needed for tasks

If you have a task that you need to accomplish and you only think it will take 30 minutes, set aside 45 or 50 minutes to do it. This way, you won’t be distracted and unfocused due to the fact that you are rushing for a deadline. If you plan your day right and accomplish your goals under the allotted, wonderful! Now you have more time for more productivity!
