Our Prized Human Resource Manager, Chavely Mendez, Gives an Inside Look at Her Job

Chavely Mendez is the Human Resources Manager here at Atlantic Solutions (South Plainfield, NJ) which is a position that holds a lot of responsibility. She handles all of the recruiting for the company, including all of the logistics and paperwork for new hires. Chavely also regularly analyzes and documents best practices for recruitment, while speaking to over 100 people per day. It’s safe to say that her position requires a certain degree of diligence, patience, organization, and an arsenal of people skills.

After college, Chavely worked in retail. However, she didn’t feel a passion towards the industry and was soon on the hunt for a position that would fill her needs.

“I had another company that wanted to hire me for a human resources position, yet after Screen Shot 2017-06-27 at 11.20.16 AMmy first interview at Atlantic Solutions, I knew where I needed to be. The people were just so welcoming and friendly here and it actually made me feel really comfortable. My nerves were calmed and the environment just felt right. I was asked to come in for another interview at the first company I mentioned; however, instead, I interviewed again with Atlantic Solutions which was the best decision I’ve made.”

When she did come back for that second interview, Chavely felt the familiar comfort and ease that she did before. I bet you’re wondering if that same feeling held up once she was hired and started her career in Human Resources – well this is what she had to say about her job:

“What I love the most is performing behind the scenes and having a real, tangible sense of responsibility. I love helping DK help build his company. I love being able to talk to everyone before they are hired and that I get to show them around the office. I really love my job.”

She sure does have a strong passion for what she does. Another part of the Human Resources role is fostering relationships with coworkers in the workplace to maintain a positive morale and a teamwork mentality.

Screen Shot 2017-06-27 at 11.20.54 AM“We do something called “Team Night” where we bond with DK, the leaders, new employees, and the rest of the team. For instance, last night we went bowling. It’s a fun and engaging way to get to know each other on a more personal level outside of the workplace. Team night provides a stress-free environment where I can learn more about our employees’ goals and what they want to accomplish, which I think is important when trying to stimulate success.”

She speaks highly of her coworkers, stating that they are mature and it’s easy to maintain both professional relationships as well as friendships outside of the office.

It is no question that Chavely is a brilliant Human Resources Manager and an immensely valued employee here at Atlantic Solutions.

3 Simple Personal Finance Tips That Will Boost Your Money Management Skills [Useful Tips]

Atlantic Solutions (South Plainfield, NJ), is home to plenty of young professionals. When you’re young it is especially important to manage your money properly in order to prepare for the future. Of course, it is also important to effectively manage your money in older years; however, it is crucial to craft a strong foundation for yourself while you’re young. Here are 5 easy ways that will help your money management skills.

  1. Budget and Reduce Spending

In order to manage your money adequately, you’re going to need to have some money to manage in the first place. Spending money on groceries, rent, utilities, etc. is totally okay and obviously necessary. However, the cost of entertainment is what really kills savings accounts. Entertainment is not only going out to the movies or grabbing drinks on the weekend – it’s eating out, shopping, or getting a coffee every morning. Those expenses really add up. At Atlantic Solutions, we sure love to treat ourselves when we can – but priorities are priorities!

Pack lunches, make your own coffee and buy new clothes only when necessary. Those entertainment expenses are killer so chop them down any way that you can. Your future self will thank you!

2. Start Building an Emergency Fund

Emergency funds are essential for many reasons. Firstly, you never know when something is going to happen. This could be unexpected costs such as funerals, medical bills, unanticipated auto-work, home repair, and a number of other things. Real emergencies. In other words, an upcoming Drake concert doesn’t count as an emergency.

These funds should be equal to 3-6 months of expenses. For example, if you spend $1,000 per month on expenses – your emergency fund should be between $3,000-$6,000. After taking money from the account, it is important to do the best you can to replenish it.

3. Pay Off High-Interest Debt

Debt is the worst – but we all have it. However, like a sickness, it will only get worse if you ignore it. There are two different methods for tackling accumulated, high-interest debt.

  • The Snowball Method is when you pay debts starting from the one with the smallest interest rate. This can give you a morale boost because you can actually watch debts disappear – yet, the debts with higher interest rates are still remaining untouched, thus costing more money in the long run.
  • The Avalanche Method is kind of what it sounds like. Paying your debts down, starting with the one with the highest interest rate. It can be overwhelming at first; however, this method saves you the most money in the long run.

Also, be careful with minimum payments! If you can budget properly and consistently keep an emergency fund, there’s no reason not to eliminate your debt while you can!

3 Techniques That Will Help Free You From Your Procrastination [LIST]

In celebration of Independence Day, the day that the United States gained independence from the British Empire, us here at Atlantic Solutions (South Plainfield, NJ) would like to provide some tips on how you can free yourself from procrastination.

Procrastination is a hard habit to shake, but adding these techniques into your daily routine will undoubtedly help you get on track!

  1. Make your bed in the morning

It sounds silly, right? But making your bed in the morning is a wonderful way to boost your brain into productivity mode. You are being productive starting from the second that you wake up, which will make you immediately feel accomplished. This nice psychological boost in the morning will set your mind in the right place, creating a desire for more accomplishments and productivity!

2. Make an organized to-do list.

To-do lists are an obvious technique for productivity. Whether it’s daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly goals, setting out your tasks in a checklist format is a great way to visualize what you need to do. However, these can get bogged up and unorganized. A great way to arrange your to-do list is to group the goals into different categories based off of difficulty and time. After that, it is best to start small – just like making your bed. It will feel great to accomplish a goal, little or small.

3. Treat it like an exercise

When somebody rolls off of the couch and decides to start working out, they don’t immediately go for the 100lb dumbells. Similarly, kicking procrastination and heightening your focus takes time and patience. There are things that you can do right away which will aid you in this process, like putting your phone away during the time that you want to be productive and eliminating all external distractions, but it does not happen overnight. Like any skill, it takes time and effort to be able to focus and be productive without procrastination, especially if it has been happening for awhile. We certainly appreciate the learning process here at Atlantic Solutions.

4. Learn to ignore things

When you have a lot on your plate, or in this case on your to-do list, it is important to learn to ignore some of it. It can be extremely overwhelming to look at a packed to-do list, organized or not because you tend to lump all of the tasks in together as one great big pile of stress. Focus on one task to get started and ignore the rest to avoid distraction and procrastination. Sometimes when we see this inordinate list, we semi-panic and turn to entertainment on the internet, which only delays our problem.

5. Overestimate the amount of time needed for tasks

If you have a task that you need to accomplish and you only think it will take 30 minutes, set aside 45 or 50 minutes to do it. This way, you won’t be distracted and unfocused due to the fact that you are rushing for a deadline. If you plan your day right and accomplish your goals under the allotted, wonderful! Now you have more time for more productivity!

Getting To Know You: Atlantic Solutions College Edition [Q+A]

The rapid growth of Atlantic Solutions would not be possible without the dedication of our incredible team members. As we kick off the month of July, we thought we would take a moment to tell you more about some of the valuable team members who help to make Atlantic Solutions the company that it is today!

First, we spoke with Nick, who attended the University of Rhode Island.

We asked him, “What were some of the activities or organizations that shaped your college experience?”

Here’s what he told us:

I was in a fraternity at URI, most of my free time was spent fishing or hiking and when the weather was nice I was at the beach as much as possible.

Next, we talked to James, who attended Kean University, located in Union, New Jersey.

James shared, “My favorite activity to participate in was a tradition that my friends and I had. We used to have group study sessions before each important test. It not only helped us on the tests but also helped us socialize and meet new people!”

Another employee, Brian attended Rider University, right in Lawrenceville, New Jersey.

Brian told us that one of the biggest changes for him was living alone for the first time.

“I was lucky to be able to enjoy the freedom and the lifestyle of the real world, without having to pay all the bills.”

Next, Hassan, a graduate of Brooklyn College, the City University of New York told us all about his time as president of the Stock Trading Club.

He was also on Brooklyn College’s Varsity Soccer Team.

“Playing soccer against other colleges was the most exciting experience because I used to promote the games in the clubs and increase our fans number that watched the game.”

And lastly, we spoke to Francis, an alum of Stony Brook University located, who told us about how much his suitemates shaped his college experience.

He shared, Whether it was playing video games, watching sports, playing sports, or just finding fun things to do. I always enjoyed that bonding experience.”

Regardless of their different experiences, majors or schools – all four of these individuals are instrumental in the work we are doing at Atlantic Solutions. Here Are 5 Tips to Spring Clean Your Life

That time of the year is upon us, wherein the normal routine of our day we suddenly realize the world is green again, flowers are blooming, birds are chirping, and ah, yes, it is Spring. We don’t know about you, but at Atlantic Solutions we are pretty excited.

giphy2

Such an elegant word, we wear Spring like a badge of honor for our survival of yet another New Jersey Winter. When people start talking about Spring, it is time to get excited. But as the sunlight starts to reach the places we thought perhaps it would never reach again, lurking in the corner is the one word which follows Spring, the word-that-must-not-be-named. Cleaning .

giphy4

The world may be green again, but the shelves dusty, the clutter unbearable, and our routines mundane. Change seems overdue, even if such change involves cleaning. Some may recoil in fear, others willingly embrace it, and the rest of us try to feel accomplished by reading life hacks on the internet, but how does one muster up the courage to organize their surroundings when life is hectic as is? There is a simple first step, and it starts with you. Yes, you!

giphy3

Think of Spring as the real New Year, now is as good a time as any to reevaluate your health, happiness, and lifestyle. So nevermind January, these resolutions start now!

● Create New Career Goals: Our careers are an important part of our lives, as well as our financial and emotional stability. It is only healthy to take a step back and ask “what could I be doing differently, and how can I improve?”
● Focus on Fitness: Physical health has been linked time and time again to benefit both the body and mind. Start at your own pace, and build the confidence you deserve.
● Write to Friends & Family: Are there relationships in your life that you have fallen out of contact with? Or maybe you just want to show appreciation for the special people that are close to you? Write a letter to share the love.
● Declutter Your Workspace: And so the real cleaning begins – an organized environment promotes clarity of thought and boosts mood.
● You Do You: Always remember to make time for yourself. Take a nap, buy a new outfit, read a book, or even go on vacation!

Alter and edit these tips to your heart’s desire, every individual requires a unique cleansing process. Spring has arrived whether we face that dreaded cleaning word or not. Whether you focus on a new job, better relationships, or simply more downtime, above all remember to live more, laugh more, and learn more!

Wishing you a happy and clean Spring from Atlantic Solutions!

Dad Was Right — 3 Tips We Finally Appreciate

Father’s Day is just one month away, so the team at Atlantic Solutions is in the spirit of appreciation of our awesome dads!

Can you imagine how far all of us would be in our lives if we actually still listened to the advice our fathers gave us as young children? Many of the daddy-isms that come to mind for our staff at Atlantic Solutions are actually just simple words of wisdom that are easy enough for a small child to understand. Let’s take a moment to re-learn a lesson or two from our dads.

giphy-downsized-large

“Money doesn’t grow on trees.”

Do you remember pulling on your dad’s pant leg and begging for the latest and greatest toy you saw on TV, only to receive the disappointing dose of reality that ‘money doesn’t grow on trees’?

By now, you’ve undoubtedly re-learned this lesson the hard way. You’ve re-discovered that most things in life must be earned — and that money is not easily acquired. This is one of the most important pieces of wisdom that any father could impart to his child. Take it from the president of Atlantic Solutions, DK, who recently told us about parenting his daughter, “I always want her to associate success with hard work.”

giphy

“You need to do your homework before you can go play.”

These words were the worst! How badly you wanted to join your friends at the playground and forget about writing that book report about The Boxcar Children.

Dad was teaching several very important lessons with this one. Firstly, he wanted you to learn how to be responsible. He wanted you to understand that the “have to dos” always come first, and the “want to dos” should follow. Secondly, he wanted to teach you the principle of ‘pay now, play later,’ or delayed gratification.

If you’ve already mastered this tricky one, there’s no doubt that you’re already well on your way to greatness.

“I don’t care if you don’t feel like it, you still need to practice today.”

We know. You didn’t want to practice the piano every day. You didn’t want to go to baseball practice in the rain. You didn’t want to wake up an hour early for theater rehearsal.

But dad was onto something. He knew that the key to success in anything you did in life would be showing up, not making excuses, and enduring the deliberate practice necessary to become great.

THANKS, DAD!

This Quote is The Absolute Secret to Success

At Atlantic Solutions (South Plainfield, NJ) we love a good motivational quote. And this is one of our absolute favorites. Are you ready for it?

“To increase your effectiveness, make your emotions subordinate to your commitments.” -Brian Koslow

Have any of these things ever happened to you?

  • You’ve accepted a job offer. You’re really excited about your new journey. You commit to working your way up at the firm. But then you have a really bad day at work. Maybe you have a disagreement with a co-worker, maybe your boss gives you some negative feedback, maybe you lose a sale, maybe you miss a deadline, or maybe you’re just feeling stressed and overwhelmed. So you start rethinking the commitment you made to yourself that you would advance and build your career. You’re feeling tempted to quit so you stop giving 100%.
  • You notice that you’re not getting enough sleep at night. You’re feeling tired and are having trouble focusing. You don’t have enough energy to work a full day and then hit them gym. So you decide that you’re going to start going to bed by 11:00 in order to get 8 hours of sleep. But then… you notice that you DVRed one of your favorite shows! You’re excited. You’ve been dying to watch it. So you end up saying up until midnight. You wake up the next morning really tired and struggle through the work day.
  • You have a great conversation with a mentor and he emphatically recommends that you take the time to plan your week every Sunday. You commit to making this a habit because you know that doing so will help you be successful. But then… you have an aggravating conversation with your mother. It sours your mood. Suddenly, you no longer feel like planning your week, so you don’t. Consequently, you feel scatterbrained when Monday comes and your week is less productive.

If these three examples don’t sound familiar, there are probably loads of other similar scenarios that come to mind for you.

The real secret to success lies in self-discipline. It’s about having grit. It’s about understanding that the difference between successful and unsuccessful people is that successful people do the things they don’t feel like doing. When you subordinate your emotions to your commitments you will be well on your way to achieving greatness.

How to Spark Your Creative Genius

For years it has been thought that the left side of the brain is the most important side. Its functions are to think in a logical, linear and by-the-number manner. According to Daniel Pink, creativity expert and author of A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future, we are entering a conceptual era in which right brain abilities such as artistry, empathy, inventiveness, and big-picture thinking will be just as important as the left. At Atlantic Solutions we believe that creativity opens up a new world of opportunity. By following these three steps, you will be able to access the right side of your brain most effectively.

200-6.gif

1) Break your routine

Routine and habit can squash creativity. Once our creativity is stifled, our minds are not challenged anymore. To break the routine, do things you’ve never done before. Join a new class at your gym, try cooking a new recipe, do something outside of your comfort zone.  Choose an activity that thrills, inspires, or even scares you. When we take ourselves out of our comfort zones and push through our fears, we liberate ourselves, gain new perspectives and expand our creative minds.

200-7.gif

2) Keep an Idea Journal

Ever had an idea come to you in a dream, during the ride to work, or in the shower? Great ideas can come unexpectedly so it’s important to write them down so as not to forget. Atlantic Solutions actively encourages its employees to take note of the things that motivate or inspire them throughout the work day. Keeping a journal handy can help to capture a thought or idea in the moment. The journal can hold bits of wisdom, observations, and inspiring words. It can be used as a brainstorming tool.

200-8.gif

3) Create a Vision Board

A vision board is where images and words are displayed that represent who you are or want to be, do or have in your life. Creating a vision board helps identify your intentions, keeps you focused on these intentions and then helps to make them a reality. Vision boards can be created for all kinds of uses such as a particular project or outlining your life’s dreams or goals at work. The vision board is a way of getting thoughts, goals, and desires on paper to add clarity and to make more indelibly on the mind. Keep the board in a place where it can be viewed daily. The more you look at and contemplate your board, the more your wishes enter into your subconscious, manifest and become reality.

200-9.gif

Learning how to spark your inner creative genius opens up endless possibilities in the workplace. While it is important to depend on our learned skillset, it is vital to cultivate our creativity in order to unlock more meaningful results. At Atlantic Solutions we value our creative employees who are able to think outside of the box, step out of their comfort zones and bring new ideas to the table.

7 Ways Your College Sports Background Will Translate into Career Success

Atlantic Solutions (South Plainfield, NJ) will be the first to tell you that college athletes make some of the best employees! Here are seven reasons why a college sports background is a valuable asset in the eyes of many employers.

1. You know how to handle criticism.

Whether it’s on the hardwood or in the locker room during halftime, you’ve been conditioned to take harsh, negative feedback and channel it into motivation. When your boss gives you pointers, much like your coach, you keep a student mentality and understand that he or she has your best interest at heart.

2. You manage time well.

Morning training from 6:30am to 8am. Class from 9am to 1pm. Help Desk from 2pm to 3pm. Practice from 4pm to 7pm. You’ve juggled academics, sports, and extracurriculars basically your whole life. The real world won’t be a problem for you!

3. You’re an opportunist!

Whether it’s a chance to take that game-winning shot, to fill in for a starting player, or attend an optional preseason practice, you know that every opportunity is a chance to prove yourself — and improve yourself. You take this belief to heart and into your career.

4. You have a growth mindset as opposed to a fixed mindset.

You’ve accepted that you’re not a 6’8 mega-athlete. However, because of those days of endless training resulting in impossible athletic improvements, you’ve developed a growth mindset. You know that anything can be done as long as you put in the work. So in the future when your co- workers are squirming in their seats about an impossible task, you’ll already be halfway done.

5. You’re a team player!

You know that communication is key. You’re constantly discussing how to overcome tough situations. You know how to work with teammates even if you don’t fancy them. You also know how to adjust, whether it’s being more of a role player or becoming the vocal leader. These intangible skills stick with you for the rest of life, and they’re especially helpful in the workplace.

6. You’ve dealt with failure repeatedly.

You’ve missed crucial shots and lost rivalry games. The feeling of failure is excruciating, but over the years you’ve learned how to rebound. You see failure as a chance to grow from your mistakes. Failure will continue to appear throughout your career, but you’ll know how to handle it no matter the circumstances.

7. LEADERSHIP.

There are many employees who have the opportunity to lead but don’t have what it takes. Not you. Your leadership skills on the field are tried and true, and ready to be applied. In fact, many office leaders were college athletes just like you!
