Here Are 5 Tips to Spring Clean Your Life

That time of the year is upon us, wherein the normal routine of our day we suddenly realize the world is green again, flowers are blooming, birds are chirping, and ah, yes, it is Spring. We don’t know about you, but at Atlantic Solutions we are pretty excited.

giphy2

Such an elegant word, we wear Spring like a badge of honor for our survival of yet another New Jersey Winter. When people start talking about Spring, it is time to get excited. But as the sunlight starts to reach the places we thought perhaps it would never reach again, lurking in the corner is the one word which follows Spring, the word-that-must-not-be-named. Cleaning .

giphy4

The world may be green again, but the shelves dusty, the clutter unbearable, and our routines mundane. Change seems overdue, even if such change involves cleaning. Some may recoil in fear, others willingly embrace it, and the rest of us try to feel accomplished by reading life hacks on the internet, but how does one muster up the courage to organize their surroundings when life is hectic as is? There is a simple first step, and it starts with you. Yes, you!

giphy3

Think of Spring as the real New Year, now is as good a time as any to reevaluate your health, happiness, and lifestyle. So nevermind January, these resolutions start now!

● Create New Career Goals: Our careers are an important part of our lives, as well as our financial and emotional stability. It is only healthy to take a step back and ask “what could I be doing differently, and how can I improve?”
● Focus on Fitness: Physical health has been linked time and time again to benefit both the body and mind. Start at your own pace, and build the confidence you deserve.
● Write to Friends & Family: Are there relationships in your life that you have fallen out of contact with? Or maybe you just want to show appreciation for the special people that are close to you? Write a letter to share the love.
● Declutter Your Workspace: And so the real cleaning begins – an organized environment promotes clarity of thought and boosts mood.
● You Do You: Always remember to make time for yourself. Take a nap, buy a new outfit, read a book, or even go on vacation!

Alter and edit these tips to your heart’s desire, every individual requires a unique cleansing process. Spring has arrived whether we face that dreaded cleaning word or not. Whether you focus on a new job, better relationships, or simply more downtime, above all remember to live more, laugh more, and learn more!

Wishing you a happy and clean Spring from Atlantic Solutions!

Dad Was Right — 3 Tips We Finally Appreciate

Father’s Day is just one month away, so the team at Atlantic Solutions is in the spirit of appreciation of our awesome dads!

Can you imagine how far all of us would be in our lives if we actually still listened to the advice our fathers gave us as young children? Many of the daddy-isms that come to mind for our staff at Atlantic Solutions are actually just simple words of wisdom that are easy enough for a small child to understand. Let’s take a moment to re-learn a lesson or two from our dads.

giphy-downsized-large

“Money doesn’t grow on trees.”

Do you remember pulling on your dad’s pant leg and begging for the latest and greatest toy you saw on TV, only to receive the disappointing dose of reality that ‘money doesn’t grow on trees’?

By now, you’ve undoubtedly re-learned this lesson the hard way. You’ve re-discovered that most things in life must be earned — and that money is not easily acquired. This is one of the most important pieces of wisdom that any father could impart to his child. Take it from the president of Atlantic Solutions, DK, who recently told us about parenting his daughter, “I always want her to associate success with hard work.”

giphy

“You need to do your homework before you can go play.”

These words were the worst! How badly you wanted to join your friends at the playground and forget about writing that book report about The Boxcar Children.

Dad was teaching several very important lessons with this one. Firstly, he wanted you to learn how to be responsible. He wanted you to understand that the “have to dos” always come first, and the “want to dos” should follow. Secondly, he wanted to teach you the principle of ‘pay now, play later,’ or delayed gratification.

If you’ve already mastered this tricky one, there’s no doubt that you’re already well on your way to greatness.

“I don’t care if you don’t feel like it, you still need to practice today.”

We know. You didn’t want to practice the piano every day. You didn’t want to go to baseball practice in the rain. You didn’t want to wake up an hour early for theater rehearsal.

But dad was onto something. He knew that the key to success in anything you did in life would be showing up, not making excuses, and enduring the deliberate practice necessary to become great.

THANKS, DAD!

This Quote is The Absolute Secret to Success

At Atlantic Solutions (South Plainfield, NJ) we love a good motivational quote. And this is one of our absolute favorites. Are you ready for it?

“To increase your effectiveness, make your emotions subordinate to your commitments.” -Brian Koslow

Have any of these things ever happened to you?

  • You’ve accepted a job offer. You’re really excited about your new journey. You commit to working your way up at the firm. But then you have a really bad day at work. Maybe you have a disagreement with a co-worker, maybe your boss gives you some negative feedback, maybe you lose a sale, maybe you miss a deadline, or maybe you’re just feeling stressed and overwhelmed. So you start rethinking the commitment you made to yourself that you would advance and build your career. You’re feeling tempted to quit so you stop giving 100%.
  • You notice that you’re not getting enough sleep at night. You’re feeling tired and are having trouble focusing. You don’t have enough energy to work a full day and then hit them gym. So you decide that you’re going to start going to bed by 11:00 in order to get 8 hours of sleep. But then… you notice that you DVRed one of your favorite shows! You’re excited. You’ve been dying to watch it. So you end up saying up until midnight. You wake up the next morning really tired and struggle through the work day.
  • You have a great conversation with a mentor and he emphatically recommends that you take the time to plan your week every Sunday. You commit to making this a habit because you know that doing so will help you be successful. But then… you have an aggravating conversation with your mother. It sours your mood. Suddenly, you no longer feel like planning your week, so you don’t. Consequently, you feel scatterbrained when Monday comes and your week is less productive.

If these three examples don’t sound familiar, there are probably loads of other similar scenarios that come to mind for you.

The real secret to success lies in self-discipline. It’s about having grit. It’s about understanding that the difference between successful and unsuccessful people is that successful people do the things they don’t feel like doing. When you subordinate your emotions to your commitments you will be well on your way to achieving greatness.

How to Spark Your Creative Genius

For years it has been thought that the left side of the brain is the most important side. Its functions are to think in a logical, linear and by-the-number manner. According to Daniel Pink, creativity expert and author of A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future, we are entering a conceptual era in which right brain abilities such as artistry, empathy, inventiveness, and big-picture thinking will be just as important as the left. At Atlantic Solutions we believe that creativity opens up a new world of opportunity. By following these three steps, you will be able to access the right side of your brain most effectively.

200-6.gif

1) Break your routine

Routine and habit can squash creativity. Once our creativity is stifled, our minds are not challenged anymore. To break the routine, do things you’ve never done before. Join a new class at your gym, try cooking a new recipe, do something outside of your comfort zone.  Choose an activity that thrills, inspires, or even scares you. When we take ourselves out of our comfort zones and push through our fears, we liberate ourselves, gain new perspectives and expand our creative minds.

200-7.gif

2) Keep an Idea Journal

Ever had an idea come to you in a dream, during the ride to work, or in the shower? Great ideas can come unexpectedly so it’s important to write them down so as not to forget. Atlantic Solutions actively encourages its employees to take note of the things that motivate or inspire them throughout the work day. Keeping a journal handy can help to capture a thought or idea in the moment. The journal can hold bits of wisdom, observations, and inspiring words. It can be used as a brainstorming tool.

200-8.gif

3) Create a Vision Board

A vision board is where images and words are displayed that represent who you are or want to be, do or have in your life. Creating a vision board helps identify your intentions, keeps you focused on these intentions and then helps to make them a reality. Vision boards can be created for all kinds of uses such as a particular project or outlining your life’s dreams or goals at work. The vision board is a way of getting thoughts, goals, and desires on paper to add clarity and to make more indelibly on the mind. Keep the board in a place where it can be viewed daily. The more you look at and contemplate your board, the more your wishes enter into your subconscious, manifest and become reality.

200-9.gif

Learning how to spark your inner creative genius opens up endless possibilities in the workplace. While it is important to depend on our learned skillset, it is vital to cultivate our creativity in order to unlock more meaningful results. At Atlantic Solutions we value our creative employees who are able to think outside of the box, step out of their comfort zones and bring new ideas to the table.

7 Ways Your College Sports Background Will Translate into Career Success

Atlantic Solutions (South Plainfield, NJ) will be the first to tell you that college athletes make some of the best employees! Here are seven reasons why a college sports background is a valuable asset in the eyes of many employers.

1. You know how to handle criticism.

Whether it’s on the hardwood or in the locker room during halftime, you’ve been conditioned to take harsh, negative feedback and channel it into motivation. When your boss gives you pointers, much like your coach, you keep a student mentality and understand that he or she has your best interest at heart.

2. You manage time well.

Morning training from 6:30am to 8am. Class from 9am to 1pm. Help Desk from 2pm to 3pm. Practice from 4pm to 7pm. You’ve juggled academics, sports, and extracurriculars basically your whole life. The real world won’t be a problem for you!

3. You’re an opportunist!

Whether it’s a chance to take that game-winning shot, to fill in for a starting player, or attend an optional preseason practice, you know that every opportunity is a chance to prove yourself — and improve yourself. You take this belief to heart and into your career.

4. You have a growth mindset as opposed to a fixed mindset.

You’ve accepted that you’re not a 6’8 mega-athlete. However, because of those days of endless training resulting in impossible athletic improvements, you’ve developed a growth mindset. You know that anything can be done as long as you put in the work. So in the future when your co- workers are squirming in their seats about an impossible task, you’ll already be halfway done.

5. You’re a team player!

You know that communication is key. You’re constantly discussing how to overcome tough situations. You know how to work with teammates even if you don’t fancy them. You also know how to adjust, whether it’s being more of a role player or becoming the vocal leader. These intangible skills stick with you for the rest of life, and they’re especially helpful in the workplace.

6. You’ve dealt with failure repeatedly.

You’ve missed crucial shots and lost rivalry games. The feeling of failure is excruciating, but over the years you’ve learned how to rebound. You see failure as a chance to grow from your mistakes. Failure will continue to appear throughout your career, but you’ll know how to handle it no matter the circumstances.

7. LEADERSHIP.

There are many employees who have the opportunity to lead but don’t have what it takes. Not you. Your leadership skills on the field are tried and true, and ready to be applied. In fact, many office leaders were college athletes just like you!

Tashaun, Jalil and Milady Attended a Seminar in California — Here Is What They Learned (Part II)

We told you we’d be back with more! Let’s hear more what the Atlantic Solutions assistant managers learned about during their recent business seminar on the West Coast. If you missed the first part of the series you can read it here!

Time Management

Tashaun and JalilMost business leaders will tell you that the way the manage their time is a factor that makes or breaks their success. So, Tashaun, Jalil and Milady were understandably grateful that this subject matter was covered at the seminar in such depth.

The first step in time management, they learned, is to determine your “why.” In other words, who do you want to be, what do you want to accomplish, and what choices are you going to make in order to achieve your goals.

The next step in planning is writing down a list of roles and relationships and prioritizing the top three, or the “big rocks.” The group watched a wonderful video, based upon Stephen Covey’s teachings, that provided a visual illustration of what happens when you fail to prioritize your most important tasks. The important takeaway was this: when planning your week, first schedule what is vital. Then schedule what is important, and only add what would be ‘nice to do’ at the very end. If you do this in the wrong order, the vital tasks will either never get done, and/or you will find yourself stressed and overwhelmed!

JalilWork Hard, Play Hard: A Successful Event!

There were so many other highlights of our assistant managers’ California excursion that we would be remiss to leave them out!

There was the dance-off on Saturday… which Jalil won and picked up $100 cash. Tashaun remarked, “He’s a dancer so I wasn’t surprised. He was very confident going in. The odds were definitely in his favor.”

Then, of course, there was lots of fun on Venice Beach with the whole group!

Tashaun shared with us that he most enjoyed the opportunity to connect with the other professionals at the seminar. He enjoyed hearing about their struggles and strengths. His biggest takeaway was this:

“If you don’t like helping people you’ll never get ahead. Your most valuable skill is transferring knowledge. Helping others is your opportunity.”

Tashaun, Jalil and Milady Attended a Seminar in California — Here Is What They Learned (Part I)

Jalil and TashaunOne of the greatest perks of moving up in the ranks at Atlantic Solutions is the opportunity to travel across the country to learn from others. We recently sent our three assistant managers, Tashaun, Jalil, and Milady, to California for a pretty spectacular seminar, a business boot camp intended to prepare them for their next steps.

The long weekend of training was extremely thorough and covered a variety of topics. We had a chance to hear all about it and have decided to spread the love. We hope you enjoy this 2-part series!

Crucial Conversations

One of the most interesting parts of the seminar was the subject of “crucial conversations,” which is a discussion had between individuals when opinions vary, the stakes are high, and emotions are running strong. The group talked about how to have a conversation that avoids a fight or flight response from the other person. They discussed the importance of having the right tone and asking open questions to prevent the other person from going on the defensive. Tashaun, reportedly, was particularly struck by the amazing examples that the speaker, a widely respected president of a large corporation, gave from her personal life. This segment of the seminar ended with the incredibly useful exercise of role-playing a variety of high-stakes conversations.

Leading by Example

image3Another impactful part of the event was the joint discussion of leadership by example and integrity. The group got to hear from an impressive self-made millionaire about some of the most important lessons he’s learned along the way. He described some of the work habits that were most influential in achieving success. He also talked about the importance of always treating people well and having a great attitude no matter what. He reflected on the practice of behaving in such a way that you would be proud for others to emulate — whether in your capacity as a business leader, spouse, parent, or friend.

Don’t worry, Atlantic Solutions has more tips to share from Tashaun, Jalil, and Milady’s business seminar! You can keep reading here.

2 Unforgettable Lessons from Super Bowl 51

Atlantic Solutions (South Plainfield, NJ) shares their business takeaways from the Super Bowl.

cgdfumsxfemq8If you’re like us, you spent Sunday, February 5th with friends and family indulging in tailgate food in front of a big screen. The typical Super Bowl Sunday! And what a game. Regardless of the team you were cheering for, we can probably all agree that it was a doozie. Did you know that there were actually 24 records broken? In addition to the great commercials, show-stopping half time performance and an incredible finish to the game, there were also some lessons to be learned!

Mistakes aren’t fatal – In the first part of the game, the Patriots made numerous errors, which the Falcons quickly capitalized on. Their kicker even missed a much-needed extra point. We all know how the game ended, just to prove, yet again, mistakes aren’t the end of the road. You will make mistakes in business but at Atlantic Solutions we teach our employees to learn from them and bounce back even better than ever.

Success isn’t final – The Falcons came out to an early lead and up until the fourth quarter were up by 19 points! No team had ever come back from that large of a deficit to win the Super Bowl. But it happened. It’s just a reminder that no matter what, you have to keep pushing forward. When you feel like you are at your best, push harder because once you’re at the top, there’s only one way to fall.

More than 111 million people tuned into Super Bowl LI, do you think they all took away the same lessons as we did? Doubtful. Something that sets us apart here at Atlantic Solutions is that we teach an entrepreneurial mentality to our employees which will give them an edge up in their careers. Something that may seem as trivial as a football game can bring about tons of lessons in resilience, leadership, passion, preparation and more. Not everyone will pick up on them but you can count on the fact that our team will!

Perfecting Your Conference Game — Tips from the Pros

Atlantic Solutions is no stranger to conferences and industry events. We simply love them and can’t get enough. We love to learn, we love to connect with other professionals, and we love to hang out with the many friends and colleagues we’ve made across the country.

We just got back from Texas from an amazing meeting and we’ve decided to share some of our latest and greatest tips for making the most out of your next business trip. Enjoy!…

Tip #1: Set a goal or two before the event begins. The keyword here is BEFORE! From the moment you hop off the plane and head to your hotel, you’re likely to be busy busy busy. And before you know it, you’re surrounded by people, grappling with your itinerary, and making sure your suit is pressed. So here’s a great airplane activity for you: take some time to write down what you’d like to get out of the conference. Here are some questions to get you going…

Are you on a mission to learn more about a certain subject?
Are you trying to find a new mentor?
Is there anyone in particular that you want to make sure you speak with?
Is there something that you’ve been struggling with that you might be able to ask for advice on?
Do you want to deepen relationships with any specific colleagues you’ll be seeing?

Tip #2: The second tip we’d like to share is about having courage. Not everyone is comfortable with approaching a stranger just to say hello and make an introduction. But we’re here to tell you that you can do it!!

One of the most valuable parts of attending an industry event is the opportunity to network with others. But, you’d be amazed by how many people chicken out from doing so! Make the decision ahead of time that you’re going to have the guts to approach someone you don’t know. Maybe it’s just the person sitting next to you or behind you. Maybe it’s the millionaire taking a quick coffee break before his next speech. You never know what will come from making a new connection, so be courageous and go for it!

Hopefully, these two tips will help prepare your mindset for the next event you attend. Stay tuned to hear more about the Atlantic Solutions management team’s Austin trip!
